Barbara is originally from the Netherlands and moved to the States in '87. She started her medical training in the early 90s and worked as an ICU/ER/Telemetry nurse until she graduated from UTMB - University of Texas Medical Branch in '98 with a BS in PA Studies. The first 10 years she worked in various ERs in Houston and for a brief 2 year period 2004-2006 she went back to the Netherlands to have her daughter Sam and took a contract there to set up the first Fast-Track clinic in an ER in Utrecht. She came back in 2006 and worked at Everett Providence Colby and Pacific Providence ER and urgent care at TEC, and then moved to Whidbey in 2008 where she worked for WCP -Whidbey Community Physicians- as the main provider at the Langley clinic until she moved her practice to Freeland where she worked for WCP at SWHC -South Whidbey Health Care- with the same company.
She left SWHC in 10/2011 and prepared to open her own Family Medicine Clinic at the Freeland Clinic in 2/2012 where she has been serving the South End of Whidbey Island ever since. We are pleased to announce that she will be joining us at Water's Edge on July 1, 2015 and will be available three days a week in the center. You can schedule appointments directly with the reception at: 360-331-6535

A note from Barbara:
"Even though I am Western/Allopathic trained I have a strong interest in Integrative, Holistic, Naturopaths and Herbal Medicine. I try to avoid writing prescriptions or 'push pills', especially if conditions can be managed with nutrition, supplements or herbal intervention or other complimentary and other integrative options. I place great emphasis on truly getting to know my patients and often times will spend 60 minutes with them on visits, which allows me to truly get to know them. It is not uncommon for me to see all members of a family, from grandparents, uncles and aunts, parents and their children, to new infants born. Knowing my patients, their lifestyles and habits, their interests and other fine details of their lives, as well as the intricate family relationships, allows me to better assist my patients in coming up with realistic treatment plans that give them the opportunity to truly change some lifestyle changes due to insights gained from our visits.
Whidbey Island is my home and it is where our hearts are. My daughter and I have been here going on almost 8 years now. This is where our roots are. Sam has been in the Waldorf school since 2008 and the Waldorf community has been our family since all our blood relatives live in Europe. Both Sam and myself are big artsy crafty people and enter into the Whidbey Fair every year. My daughter and I are fiber art artists and knit, crochet, felt and sew our own costumes for the Fearie World festivals we like to go to each year. Both of us love to dance, and both of us have been enrolled at Island Dance Theater at one time or another. I make meditation and yoga a regular part of my life and I am especially enamored with suspension yoga. I am an avid gardener and am working on getting my new project Natural Foods Whidbey Gardens off the ground this year in addition to running my practice. We have a flock of 20 chickens and a small wee dog named Fritzie that are all part of our household.
I will forward to greeting you at my new "home" in Langley at Water's Edge!
